![]() Each player carries a wooden mallet which they use to hit enemies, club openings in the levels, and collect power-ups. The general goal of each level is to climb up several layers of ice to reach the top of a mountain. Players control characters dressed in stereotypical eskimo gear: player one is the blue-clad Popo, while player two is the pink-clad Nana. It was released in North America a year later as a launch title for the NES. More classic game review soon as my old school platform arrives.Ice Climber is a vertical scrolling Platform Game originally released by Nintendo in 1985 for the Famicom in Japan, and was later converted into an arcade title in the "Vs." series (as with many early Famicom/NES titles). In fact, I am purchasing myself a Nintendo NES just to bask on classic games again. Twenty three years since it was released, the sweet memories of the game, the frustration to go to the top, clubbing seals with no doubt still gives me icy chills. On top of these obstacles, there are falling icicles to watch out for, which I’ve always caught with my head. The Polar Bear pounds the ice and forces the screen up your Eskimo falls off the screen, you are done for. Taking your sweet time though is not always the best idea – take too long and you will encounter a Polar Bear wearing sunglasses and pink shorts, because he’s cool like that. Taking them into account along with moving platforms and sliding ice, timing jumps can be more difficult. It does get annoying after a while – though Nitpickers are to look out for. Toppies (enemies) fill gaps in the floor that you or your partner had broken, returning back to it’s cave, grabbing an ice block (which are deadly when touched) and filling broken ice floors till there is none. In the Western version, a Yeti can be clubbed – clubbing Yeti’s and Seals, here comes PETA. Your enemies are to laugh at, no life bars here and you do not need C4 to defeat them your simple weapon, a wooden mallet – take that Sam Fisher! On your way to the top, you will encounter your enemies the Polar Bear, Topi, Nitpicker in the Japanese version, seals appear to club – I am not kidding. Collecting one corn from the fifth bonus stage is the only way to gain one life point, I must ask how simply does one Eskimo acquire eggplants and corn in an icy land? To finish a level, the player must grab a condor that flies back and forth at the peak of the mountain/level. ![]() On top is where you can get back your stolen vegetables the eggplant is the most common (don’t ask me how an Eskimo get an eggplant). With a time limit of 40 seconds and no enemies, the Ice Climbers often face trickier jumps and multiple moving platforms. Finally, many mountains include cloud-shaped, moving platforms as an additional hurdle. Darker ice with diagonal lines act as a conveyor belt sliding the Eskimo either to the left or right. Ice blocks that appear more square and detailed are indestructible forcing the player to take another path. ![]() Standard, dull ice blocks pose no threat other than an easily disposed of barrier. Each level/mountain has eight levels of colorful ice and a bonus stage on top. The object of the game is simple break ice and climb your way to the top, just like the tittle says, easy enough. Remember Popo the Eskimo boy wearing that tiny blue parka, and Nana the girl Eskimo that wore pink? For those who are too young to know what in the world I am blabbering about – wonder no more, let me show you a classic game that has not yet melted in my memories Ice Climber.
